Window Blind Manufacturer Articles

We are excited about this chapter because it features and rates many of the window blind manufacturers located in the U.S. This chapter took many months to produce with countless interviews and research, but in the end we were able to put forth fair and balanced ratings.

Overall the industry has been open to speaking with me and my research team. As expected, a few companies declined to speak with us but most welcomed the chance to get their information out. Within this guide there are over 28 different window blind manufacturers featured. Each article provides important information that is easy to understand with helpful facts and insight about each manufacturer. Our goal is to give you a brief description or, Snap Shot” of each company based on interviews and research. This is in no way intended to be an in-depth analysis but simply to put forth some basic facts about each company.

We hope this chapter gives you some insight into how each window blind company got its start and the main focus or direction the company is heading and types of products they produce and or sell. Below is a list of window blind manufacturers in alphabetical order.

Aeroshade
433 Oakland Avenue

Company Information: Aeroshade, the largest manufacturer of woven wood shades, draperies and folding doors in the United States, originated in Waukesha, Wisconsin in 1912 and has grown to be one of that community's most respected companies. Since its origin, demand for their products caused a need for national distribution of the shades and draperies. The use of their products in homes, schools, hospitals, businesses, institutions and college dormitories all over the United States has brought about a great reputation as well as satisfied customers.

To create this good fortune, Aeroshade developed and patented its own exclusive method of manufacturing Temlite Loomwood shades, porch coverings and draperies as well as developing the lock-twist design used in weaving the fisherman's seine twine in all Aeroshade products. (They hold the patents on this weaving process.) Aeroshade Inc. now occupies a “70,000 square foot office and manufacturing complex, situated on a full city block owned by Aeroshade for future expansion. The company's young, aggressive management foresees great growth in the future due to energy conservation and the insulating factor of the Basswood used in Aeroshade products.”

This is out of the ordinary for the industry and provides them great respect from consumers as well as from their own competitors. Bali creates inspirational blinds that are one of a kind. Bali’s designs are more modern and original than those of many of Bali’s competitors and that makes them a favorite among the brand’s core demographic, Do-It-Yourselfers. Hunter Douglas, Inc.
2 Park Way & Route 17 South
Upper Saddle River, New Jersey 07458
Phone: 201 327 8200
www.hunterdouglas.com

Company Information: Hunter Douglas has been making window coverings since 1946 when they developed the first lightweight aluminum blind. Hunter Douglas Window Fashions is the leading manufacturer of custom window coverings in North America. They continue to lead the market by introducing state-of-the-art, innovative products, providing customers with consistently superior service and continually expanding in key geographic markets.

The company boasts an extensive collection of window covering products including blinds, shades, shutters, louvers, and sheers. Since Hunter Douglas is one of the industries most widely recognized brand names among consumers, many retailers choose to carry them. A good number of them even have a Hunter Douglas showroom. If you live near a major city, you will likely find several retailers close to you that carry them. Since the Hunter Douglas brand name is so widely recognized, you may pay a premium for them. However, this can be offset by the piece of mind that comes from going with a well established manufacturer.

For many years, Hunter Douglas has led the industry in creating the highest quality, innovative window coverings for homeowners. Their “celebrated legacy” includes Duette® honeycomb shades, an energy-efficient honeycomb design developed in 1985 in response to the energy crisis; Silhouette® window shadings, introduced in 1991, which set a whole new standard of style and beauty with fabric vanes suspended between two sheer fabric facings. 1994 brought the introduction of Luminette® Privacy Sheers, which offer the beauty of sheers and the privacy of soft draperies. And most recently Alouette® Light Louvers, which combine the architectural beauty of a wood shutter, the soft fabric finish of a shade and the light control and privacy of a traditional blind.

From their website: “At Hunter Douglas, we are committed to building the highest quality, custom-made window coverings. Our products provide solutions for everyday, practical needs—from privacy to safety to light control—while also satisfying your desires for a stylish furnishing that transforms your home. View and learn about our products online then contact an authorized Hunter Douglas dealer near you to place your order. Hunter Douglas retailers and interior designers are located throughout the U.S. and Canada. For information about a dealer near you, visit our Where to Buy page”.

www.kirsch.com

Company Information: Kirsch, owned by Newell-Rubbermaid, was founded in 1907 by Charles W. Kirsch when he invented the first telescoping, flat curtain rod. This was to be the first of many innovations brought to the market by C.W. Kirsch. (See more here: http://www.kirsch.com/us/kirsch-company/history/ ) Housed under the same roof as Levolor, Kirsch also offers a quality line of blinds and shades that range from wood, vertical blinds, and aluminum blinds to roller shades and cellular shades. When you view the Kirsch product line, you will see that it is designed for a home with a more modern look. Unlike the Levolor brand, Kirsch blinds and shades are designed to be more modern and trendy. Kirsch can also be found in many retail stores, but doesn’t have quite the level of popularity that its sister company carries.

Interesting Note: In 1939 Kirsch rods were used in the movie classic, "Gone with the Wind." (What movie curtains could be better known?)

Lafayette Interior Fashions

Levolor
4110 Premier Drive
High Point, North Carolina 27265
Phone: 800-538-6567
www.levolor.com

Company Information: Levolor was founded in 1914 and began setting a standard in window fashions, design innovation, product quality and customer satisfaction. In the 1990's, they introduced their 1 inch mini-blind product and have since made their name synonymous with the mini-blind. The company offers a practical and efficient product line including great blinds and shades solutions in a wide variety of vertical, aluminum and wood blinds; cellular and woven wood shades; and sheer vertical window treatments. They offer more vinyl, fabric, and lower cost models than some of their higher end competitors. This sets them apart in the market as well as their reputation as one of the most recognized names in custom window coverings today. The company is currently a division of Newell-Rubbermaid, a giant consumer products company. Because they are a division of a large consumer products company with large marketing power, their products are carried by many major retailers. Levolor has recently expanded its product offering to include beautiful decorative drapery hardware.

From their website, “Levolor Launches World's First and Only Cordless Roman Shades High Point, NC (June 2007) -- Today Levolor® Window Fashions, a leading window treatments brand dedicated to making the window decor experience easy, announced the launch of its all-new Roman Shades collection, which includes the first and only line of cordless Roman Shades on the market. The line includes a wide variety of beautiful, new and exclusive colors and patterns with both light filtering and room darkening options, as well as new and exclusive patent pending features, such as the cordless lift system with top down/bottom up operation”.

MechoShade® Systems, Inc.
42-03 35th Street
Long Island City, NY 11101
Phone: 718-729-2020
www.mechoshade.com

Company Information: In 1968-1969, MechoShade Corp, then known as HomeCraft Drapery and Upholstery Corp, provided all types of window coverings, for commercial and residential projects; draperies, curtains, Venetian and Vertical blinds. Then they took on a new project that had window wall problems. Among other issues, the shading system could not traverse, and stack in the window bay, but had to rise into a pocket in the ceiling. The typical solution would have been a Venetian blind that stacked in the pocket; however the company Chairman requested another solution. Thus, HomeCraft developed a "flat drapery" that was exactly the size required for the window. They developed an operating system that featured a roll up shade with a looped bead chain and fabric that was custom sized to the correct width of the windows with a single thickness of fabric. The result was the creation of the original manual roller solar shade system which was named MechoShade®.

Since that time, MechoShade Systems, Inc. has continued to pioneer new developments in solar shading, including ThermoVeil® and EuroVeil® shade cloth lines. If energy efficient solar shading and visual comfort in conjunction with the more efficient use of natural resources is your priority, you may find MechoShade to be a good option.

As one of the internet's largest retailers of quality blinds, what sets this company apart is that they offer own superior line of window coverings. At SelectBlinds.com, no sale is ever final! They offer a satisfaction guarantee that exceeds almost every competitor in the industry.

SelectBlinds.com gives clear and concise helps for measuring windows, selecting blinds and installation. They also offer to find a professional to measure and/or install your blinds for you.  The website is divided into categories including wood, faux wood, honeycomb, mini, vertical, bamboo/woven, roller, sheer shades, and roman.
